Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy got the better of LIV Golf’s pair, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau, in the first-ever PGA x LIV Showdown. The PGA Tour duo comfortably won all three stages of the eighteen-hole match at Shadow Creek Golf Club.
The PGA x LIV Showdown took place on Tuesday, December 17, at Shadow Creek Golf Club. The 18-hole, made-for-TV event was split into three stages, with each six-hole stretch being played in a different format. However, the LIV Golf team could only win one hole throughout the day.
In the first stage, played in a fourball format, the PGA Tour started strong by winning the first two holes. LIV Golf moved off zero after halving the third hole. However, the Scheffler-McIlroy duo sealed the first session by winning the fourth hole.
In the second stage, played in a foursome format, LIV gave stiff competition, and both teams halved the first two holes. The PGA Tour fought back by winning the third, though the next hole was also tied. Team LIV equalized by winning the eleventh hole, leaving only one hole remaining in the second stage. The PGA Tour sealed another session on their side by winning Hole 12, securing a 2-0 lead over the Saudi-backed circuit duo.
The final six holes were played in a singles format, with players competing one-on-one. McIlroy and Scheffler earned pars on Hole 13, while DeChambeau and Koepka missed their par putts as the ball lipped out. Koepka won the next hole, but DeChambeau’s struggles with his putter continued, and the hole was tied.
On the following hole, Bryson DeChambeau got the better of Rory McIlroy, but Koepka lost his hole, resulting in another tie. The PGA Tour sealed the Showdown’s fate on the 16th hole, as both LIV Golf professionals missed their putts.
