Sergio Garcia brutal comment after being handed first Ryder Cup setback despite paying $1m LIV Golf fines

Sergio Garcia has been omitted from Europe’s Ryder Cup warm-up event next January, despite paying off more than $1m in LIV Golf fines and having his DP World Tour membership reinstated.

Sergio Garcia has been omitted from Europe’s Ryder Cup warm-up event next January.

The Team Cup will return to Abu Dhabi Golf Club in the new year, featuring 10 players from Continental Europe facing off against 10 players from Great Britain and Ireland.

Francesco Molinari and Justin Rose will be playing captains of the two teams.

It is understood that European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald values the team event immensely, using the tournament over 10-12 January as an opportunity to integrate and assess players.

The two teams were officially unveiled on 20 November, with Garcia missing out on a spot despite paying off his LIV Golf fines and having his membership on the DP World Tour reinstated.

GolfMagic was told by Garcia that he will have to serve a suspension of nine weeks.

Garcia’s LIV peer, Tyrrell Hatton, has been named in the warm-up event.

Hatton, 33, who was blasted by English pro Eddie Pepperell over his behaviour at the DP World Tour finale, has played in three Ryder Cups.

His future in the biennial dust-up became unclear when he jumped to LIV at the beginning of the year.

But he has appealed sanctions imposed on him and played in the minimum number of events needed to keep his eligibility.

Donald said: “Fran, Justin and I are really excited by the two teams which will assemble at the Team Cup in January.

“There’s a great mix of youth and experience on both sides and there will certainly be a competitive atmosphere at Abu Dhabi Golf Resort.

“This event provided valuable insight for a number of players who eventually made it to Marco Simone, with six of the 20 competitors in 2023 going on to play in the Ryder Cup, three of those making their debut appearances.

“We’re excited to see who can make their mark in next year as they try and earn a place in my side for New York City
