Scottie Scheffler stunned sports fans earlier this year when he was arrested and Schauffele has opened up about how the star’s friends reacted to the incident
Xander Schauffele has let slip how some of golf’s biggest stars made fun of Scottie Scheffler following his shocking arrest in May.
The world number one was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer and third-degree criminal mischief.
He also faced charges of reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals after he was detained while trying to enter Valhalla before the PGA Championship second round. All charges were dropped shortly after.
Schauffele will be teeing off with Scheffler in the BMW Championship this weekend and the pair enjoy a good relationship on and off the links. However the Open champion has revealed that several of the game’s most well-known names, including Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth and Patrick Cantlay gave the current Masters champion a light ribbing after he was booked into a Kentucky jail for the incident.
Scheffler shares a physiotherapist with the players, and consequently they are all in a WhatsApp group together. Schauffele has opened up about how the Olympic champion was roasted by his rivals on the chat, and that they even switched the group’s photo to commemorate the infamous moment.
“He took it like a champ and we have a group chat, with our physio, our crew. It’s me, Gary, JT, Jordan, Scottie, Pat (Cantlay) – we all share the same physio,” Schauffele told Barstool. “The boys were heckling Scottie a little bit… just enough.”
