Scottie Scheffler Responds to Fan’s Dig Over Gesture Toward Rory McIlroy During Masters Ceremony

Scottie Scheffler, the current world No. 1 golfer, is speaking out after a fan’s comment sparked debate over a perceived slight toward Rory McIlroy during the Green Jacket ceremony at the 2025 Masters Tournament.

Following his second Masters victory on Sunday, Scheffler was seen on camera during the post-round ceremony walking past McIlroy without acknowledging him or shaking his hand, despite Rory being part of the ceremony lineup. The moment quickly went viral on social media, with some fans accusing Scheffler of intentionally snubbing McIlroy, while others believed it was simply a case of being caught in the moment.

One particular comment on Instagram gained traction, reading: “Cold move from Scottie walking past Rory like he wasn’t even there. That’s not the Masters spirit.”

Scheffler addressed the controversy in a press conference on Monday morning, clarifying the situation.

“Honestly, I didn’t even realize it happened,” Scheffler said. “I was in such a blur walking off 18, with everything happening so fast. Rory’s a great competitor and someone I have a lot of respect for. There was no disrespect meant at all.”

He added that he spoke briefly with McIlroy later in the locker room and congratulated him on his strong performance during the week.

“Rory’s been nothing but supportive, and he even pulled me aside after the round to say congrats. We’ve all been in that moment, and emotions run high—mine certainly were.”

McIlroy has not publicly commented on the incident, but sources close to him say he took no offense and understood the intensity of the moment for Scheffler.

The drama adds a bit of spice to what was otherwise a masterful display of golf from Scheffler, who finished four shots ahead of the field to claim his second Green Jacket in three years. With the golf world watching closely, both Scheffler and McIlroy appear to be keeping the focus where it belongs—on the game.

As for the fans still speculating online, Scheffler had this to say: “Sometimes what you see on camera isn’t the full story. But I’m grateful for the support and the chance to wear the green jacket again. That’s what this week was about.”
