Rory McIlroy Urges Golf to Expand Globally: “I’ve Enjoyed Going to Different Places”

Rory McIlroy has called on the powers that be in professional golf to take the sport further around the world, saying players and fans alike would benefit from a more global schedule.

Speaking ahead of The Open Championship, the four-time major winner reflected on his own experiences playing internationally and expressed a desire to see top-tier events staged beyond the usual stops.

“I’ve always enjoyed going to different places, meeting new fans, and experiencing different cultures,” McIlroy said. “That’s what makes the game feel bigger than just what happens in the U.S. or Europe.”

McIlroy has long been an advocate for broadening golf’s reach, having competed in tournaments across Asia, the Middle East, Australia, and beyond. With the sport currently facing shifts in structure and scheduling, his comments come at a time when the future of global events is under the spotlight.

“We talk about growing the game,” he added. “Well, this is how you do it. You take the best players to more parts of the world.”

As discussions continue about the shape of the professional calendar—especially in light of new alliances, rival tours, and rising international interest—McIlroy’s voice adds weight to the push for a truly worldwide tour.
