Brit Oliver Bearman got the change to get behind the wheel of a Ferrari F1 car in practice on Friday but his session was ended early after a collision with Alex Albon
Teenager Oliver Bearman had his hour behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car cut short in Mexico after fellow Brit Alex Albon smashed into him.
Drivers crashing into another car in practice are rare with no-one racing one another. But there was one in the first hour of on-track action at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez when Albon lost control of his Williams.
Bearman protested his innocence, though, as he took to the airwaves himself. “He hit me! I am out. I am fine but the car is not,” he told his Ferrari engineer over the radio.
Sadly for the 18-year-old, the damage to the car meant it was the end of his session and so he didn’t get anywhere near as much time behind the wheel as he would have expected. He has already completed several practice sessions this season, though, and raced twice.
He was called up to replace Carlos Sainz at Ferrari at the Saudi Arabia race in March, with the Spaniard ill. And Haas borrowed him in Azerbaijan last month after Kevin Magnussen was handed a race ban for picking up 12 points on his FIA superlicence
