Austin, Texas – October 20, 2024
Seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton has been forced to retire early from the 2024 United States Grand Prix, held at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas. The Mercedes driver encountered a technical issue with his car that brought an abrupt end to his race, dashing his hopes of securing a podium finish on American soil.
Hamilton, who started from a strong position on the grid, appeared competitive in the early stages of the race. His car, equipped with Mercedes’ latest upgrades, showed promising pace, keeping him in the hunt for a top-five position. However, disaster struck on lap 32 when his car suddenly lost power. Initial reports from Mercedes suggest that the failure was related to an engine component, though further investigation is required to confirm the exact cause.
Visibly frustrated, Hamilton made his way back to the pit lane, where he debriefed briefly with his team. In a post-race interview, he expressed his disappointment. “It’s tough, especially when you feel you’ve got a good car and a real chance to fight at the front. These things happen in racing, but it’s still hard to swallow,” Hamilton said.
This retirement is a significant blow to Hamilton’s campaign this season, where he has been battling to secure race wins and podiums in a tightly contested championship. The Mercedes team, though much improved since last season’s struggles, has been facing stiff competition from rivals Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren. Every point counts as the season nears its conclusion, and losing out on valuable points in Austin could impact Hamilton’s standing in the driver’s championship.
