Max Verstappen Slides into Gravel After Practice Start at Turn 1 in FP1

The Dutch Grand Prix weekend got off to a dramatic start on Friday as home favourite Max Verstappen had an unexpected off-track moment at Zandvoort. The Red Bull star ended up in the gravel at Turn 1 after attempting a practice start at the end of the opening free practice session.

Verstappen, who arrived at his home race under the weight of huge expectations from the sea of orange-clad fans, had completed his scheduled FP1 program before deciding to do a practice launch as the chequered flag fell. However, the reigning world champion lost control on the run into Turn 1, sliding across the runoff and straight into the gravel trap.

Fortunately for Verstappen and Red Bull, no damage was done to the RB21. He quickly rejoined the circuit with only his pride slightly dented, bringing the car safely back to the pits. The incident sparked a cheer from the Dutch crowd, who seemed more amused than worried at seeing their hero briefly stranded.

The session itself had been relatively smooth for Verstappen, who set competitive lap times while adjusting to track conditions after the four-week summer break. With Zandvoort’s tight, twisty layout notorious for punishing small errors, the minor off-track excursion served as a reminder that even the best can be caught out.

Speaking afterwards, Verstappen downplayed the moment:
“It was just a practice start, and I ran a little wide into Turn 1. The gravel makes it look a lot worse than it was, but everything’s fine. The car’s okay, and we’re happy with the data from the session.”

Red Bull will now turn their attention to FP2, with Verstappen looking to find the balance needed to keep Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes at bay. Despite the off, the atmosphere around Zandvoort remains electric, with the crowd fully behind their local hero as he hunts for another home victory.
