Keegan Bradley has praised Bryson DeChambeau for the way he secured his place on Team USA, but Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee believes the captain faces a difficult challenge when it comes to getting the best out of the LIV Golf star.
DeChambeau forced his way into the Ryder Cup side by finishing inside the top six of the U.S. standings, despite only being able to collect points at the majors. His return to form, highlighted by his victory at the 2024 U.S. Open, has made him a fan favourite, but Chamblee says his inclusion raises questions over partnerships.
Speaking after Bradley announced his six captain’s picks, Chamblee stressed the importance of the opening session.
“Since 1979, when the Ryder Cup became continental Europe versus the United States, the winner of the very first match in the very first session has gone on to win the Cup 68 percent of the time,” Chamblee explained. “That’s how critical those early pairings are — they set the tone and momentum for the entire week.”
Chamblee noted that Bradley has “an embarrassment of riches,” with his six picks averaging a combined world ranking of 15.5 — better than Europe’s equivalent — but said DeChambeau poses a unique test.
“To me, the challenge is how you pair Bryson DeChambeau,” Chamblee said. “He’s an unbelievable talent, but notoriously difficult to partner with. He lost matches alongside Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, and even though he had some success with Scottie Scheffler, it hasn’t always clicked. Finding the right fit will be crucial.”
According to Chamblee, the foursomes format will put the spotlight on Bradley’s decision-making. “In alternate shot, you lean on your best ball strikers. That’s what Europe has done so well historically,” he added. “You can’t afford to make a mistake in that first session. I don’t think Keegan Bradley will, but it’s a real test of his captaincy.”
With DeChambeau’s power and popularity certain to draw attention in New York, the pressure will be on Bradley to find him the right partner — and ensure the U.S. gets off to a fast start.
