Xander Schauffele Reacts to Rory McIlroy’s sneaky LIV Golf dig as PGA Tour pair miss Olympic medals

Rory McIlroy was scathing in his assessment of the current state of golf after missing out on a medal at the Olympics, but Xander Schauffele didn’t have much sympathy

Xander Schauffele had quite the biting retort when quizzed on Rory McIlroy’s outspoken take following the conclusion of the Olympic Games golf competition.

McIlroy narrowly missed a podium finish at Le Golf National, finishing just shy of the medals after a challenging final nine holes left him trailing the front-runners. World number one Scottie Scheffler snagged gold in a nail-biting finish ahead of Tommy Fleetwood, and Hideki Matsuyama claimed the bronze.

The four-day golfing extravaganza was nothing short of exhilarating for aficionados of the sport, with it being one of the rare occasions this year that the creme de la creme of the golfing world battled each other head-to-head.

Rory McIlroy aims subtle, X-rated LIV Golf dig after missing out on Olympic medal
The patriotic nature of the Olympics did not escape McIlroy who summarised the strife between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour as a “s— show” in an unguarded moment post-round.

However, Schauffele, coming off a disappointing defence of his title where he tied for ninth, wasn’t too sympathetic to McIlroy’s critique. Given that McIlroy has been a vocal adversary of LIV, his recent softening seemed contradictory to Schauffele.

Punchily, Schauffele remarked: “He kind of bounces around with his opinion, you know. He said that he… he’s reverted on that topic.” Despite their divergent views on McIlroy’s flip-flopping, Schauffele conceded that McIlroy’s point regarding the Olympic event refreshing the scene held merit. “Yeah, I mean, there’s something to be said about it,” he added.
