Jon Rahm in tears after winning first LIV Golf title in tense battle with team-mate Tyrrell Hatton

Jon Rahm has his first LIV Golf victory after showing his class at JCB Golf & Country Club on Sunday, holding off challengers Andy Ogletree, Tyrrell Hatton, Paul Casey and Joaquin Niemann

Jon Rahm’s wait for his first LIV Golf win is over after producing a classy final round at JCB Golf & Country Club in Staffordshire on Sunday.

Rahm started the day at nine-under-par, three shots back from leader Andy Ogletree, who also had Cam Smith and Tyrrell Hatton in hot pursuit. But the Spaniard mustered a final round of 67 to finish 13-under-par, defeating Hatton by a single shot.

The 29-year-old was LIV’s flagship acquisition of the off-season in December, quitting the PGA Tour and joining the breakaway circuit for a reported £450million deal. But he had endured a frustrating time through the opening 10 events of the season.

The two-time major champion finished in the top 10 of each of the nine events he completed without getting into the winners’ circle. A foot injury forced him to withdraw from his other start in Houston.

But after a series of near misses, the former world No. 1 has his first victory of the year, claiming the £3.1m top prize in the process. He also banked a quarter share of the £1.2m team prize after his Legion XIII squad romped to victory in the team competition at JCB.

Speaking afterwards, Rahm said: “First of all I’ve gotta give Tyrrell a lot of credit, he’s a fantastic player and you never wanna see it end like that. I wish it had been on a playoff.

“It’s emotional, you know, hasn’t been the easiest year for our family. [My wife] and I have been through quite a bit. To get this one done… She told me our son said to bring a trophy home and I started to believe it was going to happen today. It’s been a fantastic week, a fantastic year, just a relief.”
