Golf analyst Todd Lewis has expressed doubts about Rory McIlroy’s chances of winning a Major in 2025. In a recent podcast with Ryan Lavner on Golf Channel, he said that Mcllroy needs to get over ‘mental and emotional’ barriers.
McIlroy hasn’t won a Major since 2014. Last month, Mcllroy lost the US Open 2024 despite coming extremely close. He scored three bogeys in the last four holes and missed two putts under four feet in the last three holes of the tournament. He eventually lost the tournament by one stroke to LIV Golfer Bryson DeChambeau.
Lavner questioned Lewis about how confident he was about McIlroy winning a Major in 2025 in light of the US Open loss. Here’s what Lewis said (via Golf Channel):
“If I had seen a better result from him at Royal Troon I could probably have a little more clarity. But him missing the cut handily makes me wonder that he can win a major in 2025.” (39:52-40:13)
Lewis further talked about the different approaches Mcllroy has taken to the Majors since 2014.
“I’ve covered him going in the major championship since his last win in 2014. It seems like it’s not about mechanics, it’s not about strategy it’s about where’s his mind and where are his emotions,” he stated. (40:13-40:25)
Lewis reported that in a few Majors, Mcllroy discussed approaching them as routine affairs; in some, he acknowledged their significance, while in others, he believed that a B+ game would suffice to win. Lewis highlighted that none of his strategies have worked so far.
However, Lewis acknowledged the talent that the Irishman possesses. He said that the 35-year-old is among the toughest rivals when he is in top form.
“But there’s there’s something he has to mentally and emotionally get over. We saw it down the stretch at Pinehurst, there’s something he’s got to fix there to win a major championship,” Lewis added. (41:08-41:23)
