The upcoming Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black has been hit with early controversy after Chubby Chandler, former agent of Rory McIlroy, launched a fierce critique of Team USA’s choice of captain.
Chandler argued that appointing Keegan Bradley as captain was a rushed and misguided move, insisting the 38-year-old is “far too young” for the role. According to him, the decision only came after Tiger Woods declined the job, leaving the PGA of America scrambling for an alternative. “They didn’t think Tiger was going to say no, so they suddenly picked a guy that is way too young,” he said.
What makes the situation even more contentious is the possibility that Bradley could name himself as a playing member while also serving as captain. Chandler warned that such a move would create chaos. “He’s accepted the job, but in his head he thinks, ‘I’ll get in.’ They’ve got a terrible problem.” He added that the idea of Bradley trying to both captain and play—while making tough calls on players like Jordan Spieth—would be unworkable.
Chandler went so far as to suggest that if Bradley does decide to compete, he might be forced to hand over the captaincy midway through the event to one of his vice-captains, with Tiger Woods a likely candidate.
The criticism highlights a broader issue for Team USA as they prepare to face a confident European side. With questions hanging over leadership, strategy, and team culture, the Americans risk walking into Bethpage with unnecessary distractions.
The Ryder Cup, set for September 26–28, 2025, is already shaping up to be a test of not just skill, but also of management and unity. Chandler’s blunt assessment only adds fuel to the fire, leaving fans to wonder if Team USA’s captaincy gamble will pay off—or backfire spectacularly.
