Lonzo Ball has never shied away from discussing his father LaVar Ball’s unconventional approach to parenting, but in a recent sit-down, the Cleveland Cavaliers guard offered perhaps his most candid take yet.
Speaking on LaVar’s “tough love” mentality, Lonzo admitted that while it was challenging growing up under such an intense figure, it ultimately shaped him into the man and player he is today.
“My dad was always on me. There were no days off, no excuses, no shortcuts,” Lonzo said. “As a kid, you don’t always understand it. You think he’s being hard for no reason. But looking back, I realize he was preparing me for a world that isn’t always fair.”
LaVar, infamous for his bold personality and outspoken comments about his sons’ careers, often drew criticism for his hands-on style. But Lonzo acknowledged that without it, he may not have reached the NBA level.
“He pushed me past my limits—mentally and physically,” Lonzo continued. “It wasn’t easy, but it taught me discipline. It taught me how to handle pressure. And now, even in tough moments in the league, I don’t break.”
Lonzo also noted that their relationship has evolved over the years. “As I got older, I learned to separate the noise from the intention. My dad always had love at the root of everything he did.”
Now with the Cavaliers and looking to revive his career after battling injuries, Lonzo credits LaVar’s hard-nosed parenting for giving him the resilience to keep going.
“He’s still tough on me, but I understand it now,” Lonzo said with a smile. “That’s just who he is.”
The Cavaliers fanbase, excited to see Lonzo in their jersey, is hoping that same toughness translates into success on the court as the team eyes a deep playoff run this season.
