The R&A has announced a new “last chance” on-site qualifier for the 2026 Open Championship, offering one final opportunity to join the field at Royal Birkdale. Starting next year, a 12-player, winner-takes-all playoff will be held on the Monday of tournament week, following a format similar to PGA Tour Monday qualifiers.
This move is part of an effort to enhance the fan experience, following survey feedback that revealed a strong demand for more live golf and engaging on-site activities before the main event begins.
“Our fans want more live action and deeper ways to connect with the history and atmosphere of the Open,” said Mark Darbon, the new CEO of the R&A. “These new additions are designed to deliver exactly that.”
Other enhancements include the Heroes Classic, a short-format exhibition featuring past Open champions and special guests on the Tuesday of Open week. On the Sunday prior, fans can enjoy a special fan village broadcast of the Wimbledon men’s final and the conclusion of the Genesis Scottish Open.
This year’s Open Championship tees off July 17 at Royal Portrush, with Xander Schauffele returning as the defending champion.
