Golf fans were left stunned by Brooks Koepka’s explosive behavior during the first round of the LIV Golf event at Maridoe Golf Club in Dallas, Texas.
The five-time major champion, who was six-over-par after eight holes, lost his temper following a poor tee shot on the ninth hole. Koepka slammed his club into the ground and struck a tee box marker, startling fans nearby. While no one was hit, the incident quickly sparked backlash.
Although LIV Golf later attributed Koepka’s early struggles to illness, stating he had been “under the weather all week,” the damage was already done. Koepka subsequently withdrew and was replaced by Mexican golfer Luis Carrera.
Koepka’s frustrations have been mounting following a string of disappointing performances. He missed the cut at both the Masters and the PGA Championship and hasn’t recorded a top-ten finish in a major since 2021.
Reflecting on his recent struggles, Koepka admitted earlier this month, “From April to early June, you didn’t want to be around me. It drove me nuts. I haven’t been happy—it’s been very irritating.”
Fans on social media didn’t hold back in their criticism. One user wrote, “This is worse than anything Wyndham did. He could have injured a fan.” Another added, “Pathetic behavior! Suspend him now!” Others suggested the outburst should disqualify him from future team selections, including the Ryder Cup.
Despite the uproar, it remains unclear whether Koepka will face any disciplinary action from LIV Golf.
