Tour Pro Reports Rule Breach, Leading to TwoDisqualifications

Sharing club selections is one of the most commonly overlooked rules in professional golf. Though often acknowledged quietly among players, it’s still a clear violation of Rule 10.2a, which prohibits players from giving or asking for advice from anyone other than their own caddie.

This week at the Memorial Health Championship in Springfield, Illinois, Cole Hammer chose not to ignore a minor infraction he experienced. After his first round, Hammer reported an incident involving Nelson Ledesma’s caddie, Nico Torres, who signaled “4-iron” by holding up four fingers. Hammer, out of instinct, confirmed with a simple “4.” Initially, he didn’t give it much thought, but by the end of the day, it weighed on him enough to report it to officials.

“I feel a lot better now that I got it off my chest,” said Hammer, 25, to GolfChannel.com. “It was just unfortunate that it caused a bit of a storm.”

After a thorough review on Friday morning, Korn Ferry Tour officials disqualified both Hammer and Ledesma for signing incorrect scorecards. Hammer had signed for a 69, and Ledesma for a 73 in the opening round. At the time of disqualification—six holes into their second round—Hammer was one under par overall, and Ledesma was two over. The cut eventually fell at five under.

Hammer admitted he expected he might be disqualified but was surprised Ledesma was as well. He did not notify Ledesma or Torres beforehand, not wanting to add pressure. The KFT confirmed the DQs but did not offer further comment.

Ledesma, 34, accepted the decision. “The ruling is correct according to the rules. There’s not much I can do but accept it,” he told GolfChannel.com. Torres was reportedly stunned by the situation.

Reflecting on the outcome, Hammer said, “It’s a learning experience. I’m glad I reported it. Now I can move forward with a clear mind.”

Hammer is currently 73rd on the Korn Ferry Tour season points list, having made five cuts in 15 events. Ledesma, a two-time winner on the KFT, is 102nd with five cuts in 14 starts.
