Tommy Fleetwood has voiced his concerns over the current state of tournament course setups, calling for a significant change in how courses are selected and prepared on the professional circuit.
The Englishman, known for his calm demeanor and consistency, made the remarks after a particularly challenging stretch of tournaments that saw a number of players express frustration with overly penal layouts, unpredictable greens, and inconsistent conditions.
Fleetwood emphasized the need for courses to strike a better balance between difficulty and fairness.
“We all want to be tested, that’s part of being a professional,” Fleetwood said. “But there’s a difference between a tough test and a setup that feels punishing or inconsistent. I think it’s time we rethink the kinds of courses we’re playing on and how they’re set up.”
His comments came in the aftermath of another week where scores ballooned, and players struggled to find rhythm due to what many considered overly tricky pin positions and narrow landing zones.
Fleetwood isn’t alone in his views. Several players have echoed similar sentiments, with murmurs growing louder that the sport may benefit from revisiting classic layouts or adapting current designs to better suit modern playing styles and equipment.
“I think there’s room for innovation,” Fleetwood added. “We want the fans to enjoy the game, and we want to showcase the best of our abilities. Sometimes that’s just not happening under current conditions.”
The PGA Tour has yet to officially respond to Fleetwood’s remarks, but with one of the sport’s most respected figures speaking up, the pressure to make changes may only grow from here.
