Tommy Fleetwood has joked that his son Frankie is “stealing the spotlight” after capturing the hearts of fans at both The Masters and the Ryder Cup this year. The eight-year-old has become an internet favorite, and the proud dad admits it’s been a joy watching him embrace the game.
Frankie first charmed golf fans back in April at Augusta National, where he gave an adorable interview during the par-three contest, explaining he was “trying my hardest” to hit the green. His big year continued last week as he watched his dad play a starring role in Europe’s Ryder Cup victory at Bethpage Black. The special week even coincided with Frankie’s birthday, which Team Europe celebrated by singing to him moments after lifting the trophy.
This week, the youngster has been back on the course alongside his dad at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland. Fans at St Andrews were treated to the sight of Frankie hitting wedge shots and putts during practice rounds, further fueling his rising profile.
“He’s having a great time—probably too good of a time,” Fleetwood laughed. “He’s taking too much of the spotlight. He came out yesterday with a wedge and putter, and then when we got to the 17th, which has one of the deepest bunkers in the world, he said, ‘Oh, I’ll have a go.’”
Despite joking about Frankie’s growing stardom, Fleetwood admitted these family moments are his favorite part of being a golfer. “It’s amazing for me. I love it. Being able to share golf with family is definitely the best thing about it,” he said.
Fleetwood, who started his Alfred Dunhill Links Championship campaign at Carnoustie, opened with a solid round of five-under-par to stay in contention. He heads into his second round at Kingsbarns on Friday, aiming to close the gap on the early leaders.
He’s not the only Ryder Cup star in the field this week. Teammates Bob MacIntyre, Tyrrell Hatton and Matt Fitzpatrick have also made strong starts, setting up a promising weekend for Europe’s victorious contingent.
