Tommy Fleetwood’s decision to stay loyal to the DP World Tour rather than join the breakaway LIV Golf series has proven to be the right call — and it turns out his wife, Clare, deserves much of the credit.
The English golfer, who has enjoyed a stellar 2025 season, saw his total earnings soar to nearly $20 million, following his recent victory at the DP World India Championship. The win — worth $680,000 (£506,882) — came shortly after reports revealed the staggering financial losses suffered by LIV Golf.
According to the Daily Mail, the Saudi-backed league recorded revenues of £64.9 million in 2024 but still suffered a massive £462 million deficit. The figures highlight just how risky a move to LIV would have been — a gamble Fleetwood wisely avoided.
The 34-year-old’s success this year has been nothing short of remarkable. He captured his first major title by winning the FedEx Cup in Atlanta, ending a long run of near misses that dated back to 1983, when he became known for his 30 top-five finishes without a win.
Behind the scenes, Fleetwood credits his wife Clare — who is 23 years older and also serves as his manager — for helping him stay grounded and focused on what truly matters.
In a past interview, Fleetwood admitted that he had received three offers from LIV Golf, but the couple ultimately decided against it after long discussions.
“Most sportsmen don’t actually play for the money,” he said. “For me, it’s always been about performance, improvement, and the satisfaction of winning. Of course, getting paid to play badly sounds great, but that’s not what drives me.”
Fleetwood added that Clare’s perspective was crucial in his decision-making:
“It’s my passion, but I have a family too, so these decisions aren’t just about me. Clare always says, ‘Do what makes you happy — will it really change your life?’ And the truth is, it wouldn’t.”
That advice has proven golden. With multiple wins, record earnings, and his reputation soaring, Fleetwood’s 2025 campaign stands as a testament to following passion over profit — and to the wisdom of the woman who helped him make that choice.
