Golf fans left stunned as Shane Lowry pulls off outrageous shot at BMW PGA Championship

Shane Lowry produced one of the most remarkable shots of the tournament at Wentworth, leaving golf fans and commentators in awe during the third round of the BMW PGA Championship.

Playing alongside his close friend and Ryder Cup teammate Rory McIlroy for the third consecutive day, the Irishman delivered a moment of brilliance on the 9th hole that had the crowd buzzing.

Lowry had already gained momentum with a superb 30-foot birdie putt on the 8th, moving to 3-under for the round and 6-under overall. But trouble loomed when he pushed his drive too far right at the 9th, leaving his ball in a tight spot with the trees blocking his path to the green.

With 180 yards left to the pin and no clear route, Lowry opted for creativity—summoning what commentators described as his “inner Seve.” He spotted a tiny gap between the tree trunks and attempted a bold, low shot with heavy right-to-left movement.

The strike was pure. His ball fizzed through the gap and tracked towards the green, drawing gasps from the crowd and praise from the commentary booth. The only downside? The ball had so much pace that it skipped beyond the green.

Even so, Lowry showcased his short-game touch, producing a delicate chip to tap-in range and salvaging par to remain within striking distance of the leaders on moving day.

The DP World Tour’s social team hailed the effort as “a gap only pros will go for”, while golf podcast Fore Play branded it simply “FILTHY.”

“What a golf shot, goodness me,” exclaimed Sam Torrance in commentary, while on-course reporter Jamie Spence admitted: “I didn’t see that coming!”

Fans online echoed the excitement, with one summing it up perfectly: “Needle threaded.”
