Rory McIlroy Open to Playing at Trump’s Doonbeg Course if Irish Open Heads There

Rory McIlroy says he would have “no problem” playing at Donald Trump’s Doonbeg resort should the Irish Open move to the County Clare venue in the future.

The Northern Irishman addressed the speculation during a press conference ahead of a unique four-on-four made-for-TV event at Trump International Jupiter this December. McIlroy, who has been outspoken on various issues in golf over the past two years, was asked if he would support the DP World Tour taking one of its flagship events to the Trump-owned links.

“I’ve never played Doonbeg,” McIlroy admitted. “I might have gone there for dinner once while I was down playing Lahinch at some point. But no, I mean, I’ve obviously heard the rumors. I’m not sure if it’s confirmed or not, or when the schedule comes out, but if it were to go there, I’d have no problem.”

McIlroy pointed out that the DP World Tour had already staged the Scottish Championship at Trump International Aberdeen last month, an event that was widely praised. “We’re going back to Doral next year on the PGA Tour. If it’s back on a links course, I’m not sure how Doonbeg stacks up in terms of other links courses in the country, but I’d be absolutely happy to go there and play.”

The comments suggest McIlroy has no political concerns about competing on Trump-owned courses, focusing instead on the quality of the venue and the tournament experience.

McIlroy is currently competing on the DP World Tour, where a strong opening round put him among the early pacesetters this week before two late bogeys dropped him down the standings.

“I felt like I played better than what the score reflects,” McIlroy said after his round. “I drove the ball well, hit it well, and just had a disappointing finish. But I’m encouraged by how the game feels. It’s just about being a bit more efficient with the scoring.”
