Luke Donald makes final Ryder Cup addition after Jon Rahm call

Luke Donald has completed his European Ryder Cup lineup, confirming Alex Noren as his fifth and final vice-captain just hours after finalizing his 12-man playing squad.

The Swede, ranked world No. 32, was considered a contender to make the team on merit, but injuries restricted him to only 11 events this year. Despite that, he reminded everyone of his pedigree with victory at the British Masters last month.

Noren, 43, brings experience and a winning mentality, having played a key role in Europe’s 2018 triumph in Paris. He now joins Francesco and Edoardo Molinari, Thomas Bjorn and Jose Maria Olazabal on Donald’s backroom staff for the showdown against Team USA at Bethpage Black later this month.

Donald, delighted to have the 11-time DP World Tour winner on board, praised Noren’s attitude and professionalism.
“Alex brings a lot to the table. He’s a Ryder Cup player himself, he’s competed at the highest level on both the DP World Tour and PGA Tour, and he’s someone the players respect,” Donald said.

“I love his demeanour, his work ethic and how he prepares. He’s a humble guy – it’s never about Alex, always about the team – and those are qualities that will be vital in New York. He’s a close friend of mine, we practise together, and he knows a lot of the guys well, which will help strengthen the team bond.”

Europe arrives in New York as defending champions after their commanding win in Rome two years ago. Team USA captain Keegan Bradley has already confirmed his roster, leaving several hopefuls disappointed after late calls.

For Noren, the invitation came as a surprise.
“It was a big shock when I found out. I didn’t expect it at all,” he admitted. “I want to bring a good attitude to the team room and share some knowledge from my years in the game.

“This Ryder Cup will be one of the toughest to win because of where it is – the crowd is going to be tough – but that can also inspire our players. All of us have competed in America, so we know what to expect from the fans and the courses.

“These moments don’t come around often in golf. We all know what it means to be part of this team, and I’m really looking forward to it.”

With the playing squad and vice-captains now locked in, Donald declared it is “full steam ahead” as Europe prepares for the September 26 start at Bethpage Black.
