Jos Verstappen Names Max’s Three Options for 2026 as Mercedes Face Fresh Competition
The 2026 Formula 1 season could mark the beginning of a new era, with sweeping regulation changes and a major shake-up in the driver market. Among the biggest talking points is the future of three-time world champion Max Verstappen, whose father Jos Verstappen has shed light on the possible paths ahead for his son.
Speaking to Dutch media, Jos outlined three realistic options for Max once his current contract with Red Bull comes under scrutiny. While Verstappen is signed with Red Bull until 2028, growing tensions behind the scenes and the incoming rule changes mean the Dutchman’s long-term commitment has been questioned.
Option One: Staying at Red Bull
The most straightforward choice is to remain loyal to Red Bull, the team that nurtured Verstappen into a world champion. Despite rumors of internal conflicts, Red Bull continue to provide one of the strongest cars on the grid. If their 2026 power unit project with Ford delivers, Verstappen could extend his dominance. Jos admitted, however, that Max will only stay “if the environment remains the best for winning.”
Option Two: Mercedes
Mercedes have made no secret of their interest in Verstappen. With Lewis Hamilton in the final stages of his career and George Russell building towards becoming the team’s future leader, Verstappen would be a marquee signing. Jos acknowledged that Mercedes’ resources and determination to bounce back from recent struggles make them an appealing option. However, he warned that “2026 will show who adapts fastest to the new rules.”
Option Three: Aston Martin
Perhaps the most surprising option is Aston Martin. Backed by Lawrence Stroll’s investment and the might of Honda power units from 2026 onwards, Aston are positioning themselves as serious contenders. Jos noted that Aston’s ambition, along with Honda’s proven track record, could create “a project worth considering” for Max if Red Bull falter.
Mercedes Facing New Rivals
What complicates Verstappen’s decision is the increasingly crowded field of competitive teams. Mercedes, once Red Bull’s clear rival, will not only have to fend off Ferrari but also Aston Martin, who are expected to rise further when Honda’s partnership kicks in. The 2026 reset could create a multi-team battle, making Verstappen’s choice even more crucial.
For now, Verstappen remains committed to Red Bull, but Jos’ comments underline that nothing is guaranteed. The Dutch star’s next move could redefine the balance of power in Formula 1 for years to come.
