European Ryder Cup hopeful Matt Wallace has broken his silence after appearing to confirm he has not been selected by captain Luke Donald for next month’s clash against the United States at Bethpage Black.
Wallace, 34, had pushed hard throughout the season to earn a place on Team Europe, but in a heartfelt statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), he revealed that his efforts ultimately fell short.
“It’s been a year since we were last here in Crans Montana, Switzerland,” Wallace wrote. “A year of dedication to my craft, all in the hope of trying to get a spot in Europe’s Ryder Cup team. I’m coming back with such a heavy heart but one full of pride and gratitude towards my team. We have given it everything.”
The Englishman has long spoken of his desire to represent Europe, but has yet to feature in golf’s most iconic team event. Despite his disappointment, Wallace vowed to keep chasing the dream.
“The drive and feeling I get within when the Ryder Cup is mentioned is quite surreal, especially when it’s a match I’ve never actually managed to be a part of. I’ve said on record that I will never stop trying to be a part of it until I quit playing.”
Wallace confirmed he will now turn his attention back to tournament play, beginning with the Omega European Mastersin Switzerland, an event that holds special meaning for him.
“In the meantime it’s back up the mountain to a tournament that means the world to me and I’m excited to enjoy it with my family and loved ones. Thank you @british_masters and @TheBelfryHotel and congratulations to Alex and Rasmus. See you at work. Wally. Go Team [Europe].”
Donald is set to officially reveal his six captain’s picks on September 1, with Shane Lowry, Sepp Straka, Ludvig Åberg, Viktor Hovland, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Jon Rahm widely expected to complete Europe’s 12-man lineup.
The Ryder Cup begins September 26 at Bethpage Black in New York, where Europe will attempt to defend the trophy they spectacularly reclaimed in Rome two years ago.
