Robert MacIntyre fumes after BMW Championship heartbreak: “I want to smash up my clubs”

Robert MacIntyre admitted he was left furious after Scottie Scheffler stormed past him to win the BMW Championship in Maryland.

The Scot held a four-shot advantage over the World No. 1 heading into the final round at Caves Valley, but Scheffler clawed his way back and sealed his fifth PGA Tour victory of the season with a stunning chip-in from 55 feet on the 71st hole.

“He’s hit a great shot, nothing you can do with that,” MacIntyre said after the defeat. “Yes, I had the lead, but it doesn’t matter until the final putt on the 72nd hole. When he pitched that in on 17 and then striped it down 18, it was pretty much game over.”

MacIntyre admitted his own game wasn’t sharp enough off the tee and conceded frustration got the better of him.

“I wasn’t even expecting to be over par, to be honest,” he said. “I was really expecting to go out there, foot down, and perform the way I had the last couple days. But look, he was the better player on the day. I’m just really p—– off right now. Honestly, I want to go and smash up my golf clubs.”

Despite the bitter finish, the 29-year-old is all but guaranteed a spot in Luke Donald’s European Ryder Cup team, with his form across the playoffs putting him in strong contention.
