World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will once again be without his longtime caddie, Ted Scott, at this week’s BMW Championship. Scott, who has been on the bag for all 17 of Scheffler’s PGA Tour wins—including four majors—remains away due to a private family matter.
Their successful partnership was interrupted at last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship, when Scott had to leave Memphis before the final round. Scheffler finished third after Brad Payne stepped in to carry the bag. Payne had previously filled in at the 2024 PGA Championship, when Scott left to attend his child’s high school graduation.
This week, Scheffler will have Mike Cromie alongside him. Cromie usually works with Chris Kirk, who narrowly missed out on the top 50 of the FedEx Cup standings after a T9 finish in Memphis. With Kirk eliminated from the playoffs, Cromie became available to join Scheffler’s team.
Despite the disruption, Scheffler remains in strong position as the FedEx Cup leader heading into the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland. Chasing his fifth win of the season, he praised Payne’s effort last week and expressed confidence moving forward with Cromie on the bag.
