Robert MacIntyre risks wrath of PGA Tour fans with bold gesture

Robert MacIntyre brought Ryder Cup energy to the BMW Championship with a pointed gesture that stirred the crowd and intensified his duel with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

The 29-year-old Scotsman sank a crucial par putt on the 14th hole and celebrated by putting a finger to his lips, silencing the American fans who had just erupted after Scheffler’s birdie. The moment instantly drew comparisons to the Ryder Cup atmosphere that will arrive at Bethpage Black in September.

MacIntyre, already a lock for Luke Donald’s European team, showcased the composure and confidence that have defined his season. He has six top-ten finishes in 2025 and is chasing his third career PGA Tour victory after winning the 2024 Genesis Scottish Open and the 2023 RBC Canadian Open.

“I think it’s absolutely brilliant,” MacIntyre said after his round. “When you look at the European winners on Tour this year, it’s as good as ever. Bethpage is going to be tough with the crowd, but it’ll be the same as Rome—we’re in it together.”

Scheffler, who started the day five shots back, cut the deficit to three by the 15th hole, turning the contest into a thrilling head-to-head battle. Both players matched each other shot for shot across 11 holes, building the type of tension usually reserved for golf’s greatest team competition.

Despite the fiery atmosphere, MacIntyre kept his post-round routine simple: a soda to celebrate, a call home, and an early night.

With Bethpage looming, his confidence and fiery competitiveness make him one of Europe’s biggest weapons as they look to retain the Ryder Cup.
