Tommy Fleetwood’s wait for a first PGA Tour title continues after a late stumble cost him victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
The Englishman led for much of the week at TPC Southwind and held a two-shot lead with three holes remaining, but a par on the par-5 16th and a bogey on the 17th left him one stroke shy of a playoff between Justin Rose and JJ Spaun.
Rose went on to claim his 12th PGA Tour title with a birdie on the third extra hole, boosting his Ryder Cup prospects.
Fleetwood’s tie for third alongside World No.1 Scottie Scheffler marks his 29th career top-five on the PGA Tour without a win — the most by any player since 1983. It follows another narrow miss at the Travelers Championship in June.
“It hurts right now, but I’ve just got to keep putting myself in these positions,” Fleetwood said, praising the fans who have stuck by him. “All these experiences are part of the journey.”
