Viktor Hovland didn’t sugarcoat his performance at the Scottish Open, offering a brutally honest take on his game as he prepared for an early exit from the tournament.
After struggling through his opening rounds at The Renaissance Club, the Norwegian admitted things just weren’t clicking. “I’ve been playing pretty bad, to be honest,” Hovland said. “Not much is working right now.”
Hovland, known for his usually sharp iron play and calm demeanor, looked noticeably frustrated throughout the week. He failed to find any rhythm and never mounted a serious challenge to make the cut.
When asked if there was anything positive to take away, Hovland didn’t hesitate: “Not really,” he said flatly. “This week was a step backwards.”
The timing of the poor performance couldn’t be worse, with The Open Championship just days away. Hovland now faces the challenge of quickly regrouping and finding form ahead of the season’s final major.
Still, the 26-year-old remained realistic about his chances moving forward. “I’ve got a few days to reset,” he said. “It’s not ideal, but you can’t force it. Just got to keep grinding.”
Hovland’s honesty stood out in a sport full of canned responses, but it’s clear he knows what’s at stake — and what needs fixing.
