Two-time major champion John Daly has delivered a personal message to this year’s Open Championship field, urging players to embrace the moment and respect the tradition of the game.
Ahead of the 2025 edition at Royal Portrush, Daly—who famously won The Open in 1995 at St Andrews—spoke openly about what the tournament still means to him and what he hopes today’s stars will take away from it.
“This championship is unlike any other,” Daly said. “It’s not just about skill or power. It’s about creativity, patience, and having respect for the history of this great game.”
Now 59, Daly isn’t in the field this year but remains closely connected to the event. Known for his bold personality and powerful swing, he’s also long been a fan favorite for his unfiltered honesty and passion for golf’s oldest major.
In his message, Daly encouraged younger players not to get caught up in pressure or media noise. “Don’t take a single round for granted,” he said. “Soak it all in—the fans, the weather, the challenge. The Claret Jug means something special. Go earn it.”
He also reminded players to enjoy the journey: “Some of my best memories in life happened during The Open. It’s a privilege to play in it—don’t forget that.”
While Daly’s competitive days at the Open may be behind him, his legacy and words continue to resonate, especially at a venue like Royal Portrush, where tradition and challenge go hand in hand.
