In a candid and cutting statement, Scheffler called out LIV Golf, labeling it as “golf’s biggest problem” and blaming it for the division currently fracturing the game.
Scheffler, known for his calm demeanor and competitive edge, didn’t hold back when addressing the state of professional golf during a recent press appearance. “The game is suffering,” he stated. “We used to all compete together, and fans had a clear picture of the best in the world. Now, it’s fragmented—because of LIV.”
LIV Golf, backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, has caused a seismic shift in golf’s landscape by luring several top players away from the PGA Tour with lucrative contracts and no-cut events. While some players have embraced the format and payday, others, like Scheffler, believe it has come at the cost of unity, competitiveness, and the traditions that have long defined the sport.
“There’s no denying the talent over there,” Scheffler admitted. “But how do we crown a true world number one, or grow the game globally, when half the best players aren’t competing in the same tournaments?”
Scheffler also criticized the confusing state of major championship qualifications and the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the proposed PGA Tour–LIV merger. “The fans are confused, the players are frustrated, and leadership is divided. That’s not how a sport thrives,” he said.
