Disgraced former Masters champion Ángel Cabrera claimed his second senior major title in just one week with a hard-fought win at the 2025 Senior PGA Championship.
The 55-year-old Argentine shot a final-round 69 to finish at 8-under par, narrowly defeating Padraig Harrington and Thomas Bjørn by a single stroke at Congressional Country Club in Maryland.
Cabrera, who also won last week’s Regions Tradition by one shot over Jerry Kelly, now has back-to-back major titles on the PGA Tour Champions circuit.
“Winning a major is always incredible, and I’m very proud,” Cabrera told reporters after his victory. “But it brings up a lot of emotions. It’s hard to process everything I’ve been through.”
Cabrera was referring to the turbulent period that followed his incarceration for multiple domestic violence offenses. Between 2021 and 2023, he served 30 months in South American prisons after being convicted of assault, theft, and intimidation against former partners.
He was arrested in Brazil in early 2021 after being listed on Interpol’s Red Notice and extradited to Argentina later that year. His convictions include charges of violence and threats against ex-girlfriends Cecilia Torres Mana and Micaela Escudero, with a third complaint from ex-wife Silvia Rivadero still under investigation.
Despite public backlash, Cabrera returned to The Masters in 2024, his first appearance at Augusta National since his release from prison in August 2023. Tournament chairman Fred Ridley acknowledged the controversy, stating that while Augusta National “deplores domestic violence of any type,” Cabrera had served the sentence imposed by Argentine courts and, as a past champion, was invited to compete.
Since his release, Cabrera has expressed remorse and a desire to turn his life around. During this year’s Masters, he said, “Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I respect that. Life has given me another opportunity. I want to do the right thing with this second chance.”
Cabrera is now married to Yamila Alvarez, with whom he shares a young son.
Though his return to competitive golf has been met with scrutiny, Cabrera insists he is focused on making the most of his opportunity to move forward—both professionally and personally.
