Watch: Max Verstappen Sarcastically Applauds Franco Colapinto During Monaco FP1

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was seen sarcastically clapping and giving a thumbs up to Alpine’s Franco Colapinto during the first practice session (FP1) at the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix. The Dutch driver, who finished the session in P2 behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, showed early pace despite concerns over Red Bull’s performance on low-speed circuits like Monaco.

Verstappen’s frustration grew after being repeatedly held up during his flying laps. While he encountered traffic from several drivers — including Gabriel Bortoleto in the swimming pool section — it was Colapinto’s obstruction in the first sector that drew a particularly sarcastic reaction. Verstappen responded with an exaggerated applause and a thumbs up directed at the rookie driver.

Though a four-time world champion, Verstappen has secured pole at Monaco only once, in 2023, though he has won the race twice, in 2021 and 2023.
