Scottie Scheffler has confirmed that Rory McIlroy wasn’t the only player asked to change his driver ahead of the 2025 PGA Championship.
Scheffler revealed he had to replace his driver after it failed a routine conformity test, backing up earlier suggestions from fellow pro Xander Schauffele. Despite the setback, Scheffler held off a surging Jon Rahm to secure his third major title at Quail Hollow, winning by five strokes after starting the final round with a three-shot lead.
Much of the week’s buzz centered around reports that McIlroy had to switch out his TaylorMade Qi10 driver, which USGA officials ruled non-conforming due to a failed CT (characteristic time) test — a measure of how much spring-like effect a clubface generates.
McIlroy declined to speak to the media throughout the event, leaving questions unanswered about the situation. Meanwhile, Scheffler, when asked about his own experience, said the issue was not the reason behind his errant drives on the front nine.
“My driver did fail me this week,” Scheffler explained. “We kind of expected it. I’ve been using it for over a year and was lucky it lasted that long.”
Schauffele has since called for universal driver testing on tour to ensure fairness across the board.
