In a surprising and unfortunate turn just days before the start of the 2025 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, Jon Rahm has officially withdrawn from the tournament due to a painful foot infection.
The two-time major champion, who won the U.S. Open in 2021, had been struggling with a lesion between the fourth and fifth toes on his left foot. The issue, which began during the recent LIV Golf event in Houston, forced Rahm to withdraw from that competition after just six holes. Despite receiving antibiotics and medical treatment, the infection worsened, leading to persistent swelling and discomfort.
At a press conference earlier this week, Rahm appeared visibly affected, even wearing a flip-flop on his left foot to prevent further irritation and keep the area dry. It was a subtle but clear sign of how serious the situation had become.
Rahm’s withdrawal is a notable absence in what has already been a challenging year for the 29-year-old. Since moving to the LIV Golf League, Rahm has consistently finished in the top 10 but has yet to secure a win. In major championships this season, he tied for 45th at the Masters and missed the cut at the PGA Championship, breaking a streak of 18 straight made cuts in majors.
His place in the U.S. Open field will now be taken by Jackson Suber, a 24-year-old from Tampa, Florida.
Rahm’s fans and fellow players will undoubtedly miss his competitive presence at Pinehurst. For now, the golf world wishes him a full recovery and hopes to see him back on the course soon.
