In a dramatic shake-up at Alpine F1, rookie driver Jack Doohan has been demoted after just six races into the 2025 season. The Australian will be replaced by Argentine driver Franco Colapinto for the upcoming Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola and the subsequent four races .
This decision comes on the heels of team principal Oliver Oakes’ resignation, with Flavio Briatore stepping in to assume leadership responsibilities. Briatore, who returned to Alpine in 2024 as an executive advisor, is known for his assertive management style and has a history of success with the team during its Benetton and Renault eras .
Doohan’s performance this season has been underwhelming, with no points scored and a series of incidents, including a crash at the Miami Grand Prix. Despite his struggles, Doohan will remain with Alpine as the primary reserve driver, expressing his commitment to the team and his determination to return stronger .
Colapinto, 21, impressed during his stint with Williams in 2024 and joined Alpine as a reserve driver earlier this year. His promotion to the race seat is part of Alpine’s strategy to evaluate their driver lineup ahead of the 2026 season .
The team’s decision to implement a “rotating seat” policy reflects a broader effort to revitalize its performance, as Alpine currently sits ninth in the Constructors’ Championship. With the switch to Mercedes power units planned for 2026, Alpine is clearly positioning itself for a significant transformation in the coming seasons .
As the F1 circus heads to Imola, all eyes will be on Colapinto’s debut with Alpine and whether this bold move will pay off for the struggling team.
