Kimi Antonelli Makes History in Miami as Emotional Father Celebrates Sprint Pole

Kimi Antonelli made headlines at the Miami Grand Prix by becoming the youngest driver ever to secure pole position in any format of Formula 1, earning the top spot for the Sprint race. The 18-year-old Mercedes rookie delivered a standout performance in qualifying, and the emotional moment was capped off by a heartfelt embrace with his father, Marco Antonelli, in the team garage.

The touching scene, captured in a widely shared video, showed Marco repeatedly hugging his son in celebration of the milestone achievement. Kimi’s performance comes amid high expectations, having been selected as the successor to Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes. While the team has stressed the importance of giving him time to adapt, Antonelli appears to be progressing rapidly.

Despite limited experience and it being his first time racing on Miami’s 5.4-kilometer circuit, Antonelli impressed throughout qualifying. He topped SQ1 and maintained strong pace through to SQ3, ultimately clinching pole for the Saturday Sprint.

His achievement dethrones Sebastian Vettel as the youngest pole-sitter in F1 history across all formats—another sign of the promising future ahead for the young Italian driver.
