He’s only snagged one major tournament so far, the Open Championship back in 2019 where he finished at a pretty impressive 15 under. He’s yet to conquer the Masters and as we all know Rory McIlroy was the first Irishman to do it, winning in 2025.
After McIlroy’s victory Lowry was quick to offer his congratulations. But, you know, even amidst the well wishes, he let slip his true desire—he wants that jacket too. He was on the SiriusXM podcast and he really went into it.
“I put in a lot of work and the leaders at the Masters, they share that.My main goal was just to be in the mix, playing on Saturday afternoon and going into the final round “
And I thought I did a pretty good job of that, actually. You know I let the course get away from me on Sunday. The putting was a real struggle. I’ve never seen the course quite like that. I mean, I’ve played Augusta late on a Sunday a couple of times, but it’s never been that firm that hard.”
He then added”I’m not sure I was fully prepared for it. However I definitely learned a lot.You do learn more from losses, probably, than from wins, in a way. So, I took a lot away from it. Hopefully, you know, next year, I always said my number one goal was, I wanted to be the first Irishman to wear the green jacket. Well, that isn’t going to happen now, sadly.
So, my main goal or one of my goals and over the next twelve months will hopefully be for Rory to be putting that jacket on me next April.”
